Advice Needed!!!

Okay all you bakerellas: I need your help!

I am planning on making sugar cookies as favors for Emma's first birthday party this weekend. My friend Laura gave me the idea. I am going to make them in the shape of the number one.

My problem is, I don't know HOW to make sugar cookies (cause I'm assuming that I need to do this from scratch) and I don't know HOW to make ICING.

Please explain to me how I can do this. I am used to buying the cookies on a sheet that are ready, all you do is bake.

YIKES.

  2. 1 c butter
    1 c sugar
    2 eggs
    1 tsp vanilla
    2 1/2 c flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt

Sift flour and add baking soda and baking powder. In a separate bowl, cream the butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla. Incorporate the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.

Make the dough and roll it into a big ball. I wrap it up in wax paper and chill overnight.

On a floured surface, out of the sunlight, and in a cool room (this helps me, I often roll my dough out on a baking board or wooden cutting board, not the countertops, it's easier for me!) roll out the dough into 1/4 inch thickness, and cut out your shapes.

Bake 6-8 minutes, depending on how soft-crispy you like your cookies!

You can usually make a simple icing from confectioners sugar and milk, it's really thin but you can add food coloring or whatever. Add sprinkles or acrutements when the icing is wet, and you're good to go! Or do cream cheese icing with cream cheese, confectioners sugar, vanilla, and food coloring if you want it pink!

  3. I was just about to say...don't make them from scratch. But then I saw our bloggy sister's recipe above. And I feel inadequate. So I'm going to hide behind b.e.g.'s response and say, "Go with that!"

And as the one thing I know...she's definitely right about the icing! I've made that before, and it works!

  5. The key to making the cookies look like those fancy professional sugar cookies is the icing. Royal icing pipes best and dries smooth. I agree with Sarah above - Annie's Eats has a good tutorial. So does www.joyofbaking.com . I've tried this and found the piping process to be a bit time consuming and difficult to get perfect. My advice would be to do a trial run before you start on the first birthday cookies.

Can't wait to see how they come out - you'll have to share pictures when they're done!

  6. I say buy the cookies in a tube, roll them and cut them, then all you have to do is worry about the icing!! Seems like a time saver to me!

  9. You can do it!! About the icing...we always did powdered sugar with milk. Add milk a little at a time so it doesn't get too thin. I always ice them on a cooling rack with wax paper underneath as the icing will run. You're going to do great. And way to go with a favor that's not a piece of junk! :)
