Mini Book Review

Okay, let's get to it. I have read several books lately, both of which are New York Times Bestsellers. And, I will be claiming spoiler alerts, so if you haven't read or you wish to read and be surprised, scroll on down to the last book. I haven't finished it yet, therefore it will not have a spoiler.

Allow me to elaborate.

First up, Little Bee by Chris Cleave. I read this book on the recommendation of Mrs. Doctor. Oh, Mrs. Doctor, please forgive, but I was not in love with this book. I guess because it was so built up as a NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER that I was expecting "jazz hands!" But, no. Not for me. It was very touching, but it was not as horrific as I thought/was expecting. One of the main characters, Little Bee, is a Nigerian refugee who goes to England, and goes through some rough stuff. The reason she comes to England is because of the other main character and her husband, whom she met while they were on vacay in Nigeria. (Is it who she met or whom she met? Help please...) Anyways, this story was about giving up for others. It was, at times, a look at self sacrifice and true reflection. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't all it was cracked up to be (to me).

Next up, The Help by Kathryn Stockett-I ADORED it. Seriously, if you haven't read it, go.get.it.now. I could not put it down. I think I read it in 4-5 days, which is fast when you have a full time job and kid! Only reading at night and when I pumped. I am in love with Skeeter, Aibileen, and Minny. I was cringing at the things that people did. It made me so mad! My parents both grew up with black housekeepers and I know this is "how things were" but it still just touched a nerve with me-these lazy ass women who seemed to dislike their kids and thought black people were vile-ughhh. I was holding my breath through most of this book. Really, you have to read this! Britt, K, and Kim-if you haven't read it yet I will bring it to you on the girls' trip! Best book I've read in a while!

Currently I am reading Look Again by Lisa Scottoline. I love Lisa. And so far, this book is not disappointing. It is about a woman who receives a missing child card in the mail and discovers that it looks almost identical to her adopted son. She is on a mission to find out what is what. Very intriguing. It makes you ask the question and examine yourself, "What would you do if this happened to you?" So far, this is a great book for self reflection. I can't wait to find out what happens!

I have many books on the nightstand to read. At least 5. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are: The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes, Firefly Lane, and Dear John. I pick up books every time I go to Costco or when someone recommends them and they sound fab! Husband and I also just got The Love Dare couples devotional and are about to start that. Has anyone done/read The Love Dare???
What are you reading lately that I need to get my paws on??? Do share!
xoxo

  1. I LOVE Lisa Scottoline and have read that one. The other ones you are reading are much too educational for me! As for "The Help", your grandmother read it and loved it! I haven't tried - it's too realistic. I like that trash I can lose myself in - as long as the good guy wins in the end!! ♥
